They are not competitors — they are complementary
ITIL and PMP are frequently held together by senior IT professionals precisely because they cover different things. ITIL governs how ongoing IT services are managed and improved. PMP governs how discrete projects are planned and delivered. In most large organisations, IT projects deliver outputs that then become live services managed under ITIL practices.
A common career path in enterprise IT: ITIL Foundation first (accessible, no prerequisites, quick), then PMP after 3–5 years of project leadership experience (harder, longer, higher salary ceiling). This combination is extremely marketable for senior IT management and consulting roles.

The accessibility argument for starting with ITIL
PMP has a formal prerequisite: you must have led projects for at least 36 months before you can even sit the exam. This is a genuine barrier. ITIL has no prerequisites whatsoever — anyone can sit the Foundation exam, at any career stage.
For professionals early in their IT careers, or transitioning into IT from another field, ITIL Foundation provides a fast, credible, internationally recognised qualification that immediately improves CV competitiveness. PMP can follow naturally once the experience requirement is met.
For professionals who already have extensive project leadership experience and are primarily targeting project management roles, PMP is the higher-value certification. But even in this case, holding ITIL alongside PMP significantly broadens your appeal to enterprise employers who need people who can bridge project delivery and live service operations.
