Mistake 1: Treating it as a definitions test
The single most common mistake is studying ITIL like a vocabulary list — memorising definitions in isolation without understanding how concepts connect. The real exam rarely asks "what is X?" It asks "a team is facing situation Y — which practice or principle applies?"
This matters because two answer options can both be technically accurate definitions, but only one fits the specific scenario described. Candidates who memorised definitions without practising scenario application often eliminate the wrong option under time pressure, because they are pattern-matching keywords rather than reasoning through the situation.
The fix: every time you learn a concept, immediately find or write a scenario question that tests it. Passive reading builds recognition; scenario practice builds the decision-making the exam actually assesses.
Mistake 2: Confusing similar-sounding terms
ITIL has several term pairs that sound alike but mean different things, and the exam exploits this deliberately. "Incident" versus "problem" is the classic example — an incident is an unplanned interruption or reduction in quality of a service; a problem is the underlying cause of one or more incidents. Get this backwards and several questions become unanswerable correctly.
Similarly, "outputs" versus "outcomes" trip up many candidates — an output is a tangible deliverable, an outcome is the result that a stakeholder actually values. A service can produce the right output and still fail to deliver the outcome the customer wanted.
Build yourself a short list of these confusable pairs as you study and drill them specifically — they show up disproportionately often relative to how much study time most candidates give them.
Mistake 3: Ignoring the newer v5 content
Since the v5 update, a meaningful portion of the exam covers material that simply did not exist in ITIL 4 — the AI capability model, data governance as a formal practice, and the restructured Product and Service Lifecycle. Candidates who studied primarily from older ITIL 4 materials, or from outdated free resources still circulating online, consistently underperform on this section specifically.
If any study material you are using does not mention AI governance, data governance as a named practice, or uses "Service Value Chain" terminology instead of the updated Product and Service Lifecycle Model, you are looking at ITIL 4 content, not v5. This alone can cost several exam questions.
Mistake 4: Poor time management during the exam
60 minutes for 40 questions gives an average of 90 seconds per question — generous, but candidates who get stuck on one difficult question and burn five minutes on it often end up rushing the final ten questions as a result.
A better approach: answer every question you are confident about first, flag anything uncertain using the exam software's flag feature, and return to flagged questions only after completing a full pass through the exam. This guarantees you never run out of time before seeing every question at least once.
There is no penalty for guessing, so never leave a question blank — even an educated guess between two remaining options after eliminating two wrong ones gives you a 50% chance, which is far better than a guaranteed zero from leaving it blank.
Mistake 5: Overlooking the guiding principles in practice
Most candidates can recite the seven guiding principles from memory — focus on value, start where you are, progress iteratively with feedback, collaborate and promote visibility, think and work holistically, keep it simple and practical, optimise and automate. Far fewer can correctly identify which principle applies in a specific workplace scenario, which is exactly what the exam tests.
For each principle, make sure you can state not just its name but a one-sentence example of what it looks like in practice. "Start where you are" scenarios typically involve a team wanting to discard existing processes entirely rather than assess what is already working — recognising that pattern is the actual exam skill, not reciting the principle's name.
