Foundation is the entry point, not the destination

ITIL Foundation certifies that you understand the core concepts — the Service Value System, the guiding principles, key practices. It qualifies you to work alongside ITSM processes and speak the vocabulary, but it does not itself qualify you for a senior ITSM role. The certification scheme continues well beyond Foundation, and understanding the full path helps you plan rather than stall out after your first certificate.

Most employers treat Foundation as a baseline expectation for ITSM-adjacent roles rather than a differentiator. The certifications above it are where genuine specialisation and career advancement happen.

The ITIL Practitioner tier

The next step for most candidates is an ITIL Practitioner-level certification, which goes deeper into applying ITIL concepts in real operational contexts. This tier typically covers practical application of the guiding principles, hands-on practice implementation, and more scenario-heavy assessment than Foundation.

This level suits people already working in IT service delivery roles who want to formalise and deepen practical knowledge beyond the conceptual Foundation level.

The Specialist modules

Beyond Practitioner, ITIL offers Specialist modules that focus on specific domains. Common specialist areas include creating, delivering and supporting services (the operational side of ITSM), driving stakeholder value (focusing on customer and user experience), and high-velocity IT (covering digital transformation, DevOps integration, and modern delivery approaches).

Each Specialist module is a standalone certification with its own exam. Candidates typically choose modules aligned with their actual job function — someone in a service desk leadership role gains more from the service delivery and support module than from the high-velocity IT module, for example.

The Strategic Leader modules

Strategic Leader modules target more senior roles — IT leaders and managers who need to align IT strategy with overall business strategy, not just operate services day to day. These modules cover digital and IT strategy formulation, organisational change leadership, and how IT decisions connect to broader business outcomes.

This tier is generally pursued by candidates several years into their career, often those moving from hands-on ITSM roles into leadership or strategic planning positions.

Which path fits which career goal

For service desk and operational roles: Foundation, followed by a Specialist module in service creation, delivery and support, gives the most directly applicable skill set.

For those moving toward IT management: Foundation, then progressively toward Strategic Leader modules, builds the strategic and leadership framing that operational certifications do not cover.

For those in digital transformation or DevOps-adjacent roles: the high-velocity IT Specialist module specifically addresses how ITSM principles apply in fast-moving, continuous-delivery environments — genuinely useful content for anyone bridging traditional ITSM and modern engineering practices.

There is no single "correct" path — the right next certification depends entirely on the direction you want your career to take, not a fixed progression everyone should follow identically.

Start with a strong Foundation

Whatever path you choose next, a solid Foundation pass makes every subsequent module easier.
